Returning to Our Roots

Mahalo to everyone who attended our FREE screening of "Roots of `Ulu" and "Sons of Halawa". A special mahalo to filmmakers John Antonelli and Matt Yamashita for joining us for an inspiring Q&A session after the films. Several scenes from John Antonelli's "Roots of `Ulu" were filmed on the Health Center's main campus including a blessing of the 'Ulu Trail and Garden and a "talk story" circle with members of the Health Center's Agnes Kalaniho'okaha Cope Native Hawaiian Traditional Healing Center.

Matt Yamashita's "Sons of Halawa" tells the moving story of Pilipo Solatorio, the carrier of the ancient Hawaiian traditions of Molokai's Halawa Valley. Now the last of his generation living in Halawa, the story follows Pilipo's efforts to find a successor to replace him so that Halawa's cultural treasures are not lost forever. The DVD as well as the music CD from the film, "Mele O Halawa", are available for purchase! Half of all proceeds go Pilipo Solatorio and his family.
