The Wai`anae Health Academy

Ke Ola Loa Ka Na`auao (Lifelong Learning)

In 1992, WCCHC established the Waianae Health Academy (WHA) as a means to offer educational programs in the community that are based on culturally sound best practices that address the educational, vocational, healthcare training and employment needs that exist for Waianae Coast residents. The WHA was based on the wisdom of the WCCHC Board of Directors and community members that a good education and meaningful employment are vital to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of the individual, the family and the community.

The WHA is the only community-based education program along the Leeward Coast that provides community college vocational certificate programs and fundamental college courses for qualified residents, often tuition-free. A model of community-academic partnership, WHA demonstrates the effectiveness of community-based learning that incorporates the integration of Hawaiian cultural values, core community values, and academic achievement.

Over the past 25 years, the WHA has provided a wide range of job training and certificate programs for thousands of Waianae Coast residents, many of them the first in their family to pursue education beyond high school and gain meaningful employment that pays a livable wage and provides career mobility. Since it was established, WHA has provided health career certificate programs such as nurse aide, medical assisting, medical terminology, practical nursing, community health worker, phlebotomy, dental assisting, medical reception, medical coding/ billing, pharmacy technician, occupational therapy assistant, plant landscaping, and agricultural technology, as well as college preparatory and pre-requisite courses.

The Wai`anae Health Academy also offers comprehensive Haumana Kōkua (student support services) to assist participants and support their success in the program. This service includes assistance in completing the WHA application process, applying for financial scholarships, awards and financial aid, and having access to an assigned Education Specialist who is available to help the student find resources which address other barriers to education.
