Preventive Health programs focus on improving quality of life and health care utilization patterns by preventing chronic conditions, by reducing chronic disease risk factors, and by healing the whole person through multidisciplinary systems.  Primary care is linked with traditional Hawaiian healing, health and nutrition education, disease management, group support, behavioral intervention, and an array of individual and group fitness activities.

Programs include:

Chronic Disease Management

Focuses on interactive disease self management that involves the patient, caregiver, and health educator, and encompasses medication management, apparatus management, lifestyle change, and prevention education to assist the patient in caring for asthma, diabetes, and other obesity-related conditions.  Call 696-1558 for an appointment.

Community Health Education

Health education is available to schools and other community groups and may focus on topics ranging from healthy snacks to safety and sanitation.  Call 696-1558 for more information.

Diabetes Support Group

The Diabetes Support Group is a naturally-formed group that has met weekly since the mid-1980’s.  Weekly activities include health education, field trips, healthy potluck lunches, gardening, and outside speakers are featured Wednesday mornings from 8:30-9:30 am in the Health Center’s Dining Pavilion.  Call 696-1528 or 306-5194 for more information.

Kid-Fit Program

Teen fitness program that incorporates circuit training, group sports, and dance activities into its biweekly sessions (Tuesday and Thursdays 4-5:00 pm in the Malama Ola fitness center).  Call 696-1558 for information.

WIC (Women, Infant and Children Program)

WIC is a federally funded supplemental food program that targets pregnant, lactating, and postpartum women; infants; and children less than 5 years of age that are low income and have a health or nutritional risk.  WIC provides health monitoring, nutrition education and supplemental foods and is available by appointment Monday through Friday.  For an appointment, call 696-5561, 696-1504 or 696-1505.

Fitness Training and Classes

Group fitness classes such as salsa, kick boxing, strength training, and yoga are available in the Malama Ola fitness center Monday through Friday (schedule subject to change).  Classes are free to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center patients and employees and available for a fee of $1 to the community.  Individual fitness training is available through the Malama Ola Lifestyle Enhancement Program for Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center patients.  Call 696-1558 for more information.

Health Education (Smoking Cessation, Asthma)

Individual and group smoking cessation education is provided that incorporates Western cessation methodologies, traditional Hawaiian healing, wellness and alternative interventions.  The program includes case management, outreach, and monthly group support.  Call 696-1599 for information.

Medical Nutrition Therapy

Individual nutrition assessment and intervention is provided by Registered Dietitians and is available in all of the Health Center’s clinics by appointment.  Call 696-1526 or your clinic receptionist for an appointment.

Family Planning

Individual and group education is provided covering pregnancy prevention, birth control, and STD information.  For information on the Waianae Coast, call 696-1599.  For information in Waipahu/Kapolei, call 676-7233.

Anonymous HIV Counseling and Testing

An HIV Counselor provides anonymous counseling and testing.  Call 306-5006 for an appointment.
